Our Mission

LB Tech is a non-profit dedicated to advancing Long Beach as a center for tech innovation.

We strive towards transforming the Future of the Technology Sector in the City of Long Beach, by community awareness and networking tech influencers through meet-ups, pitch days and hackathons in the city.

Long Beach Tech is the hub of all things tech in Long Beach. The challenge of launching any tech start-up in its infancy is a difficult one and often times founders give up large portions of expensive equity to start their business. We are building a community, an incubator and a super connector to support early stage start-ups and tech at the beach.

Long Beach has the right ingredients to be a high tech city of the future, yet lacks the cohesive path for executing and fully realizing this destiny. The missing ingredients are things such as; teaching engineering in the early years, lack of experienced local mentorship, and an opaque path to initial capital for Long Beach based businesses.

Long Beach Tech focuses on bringing together all available resources in the city and local communities to support further growth of the technology sector and early stage tech related companies. The Beach Super-Connector is here! Stay tuned as our mission evolves and our community grows. Bootstrap Beach is on its way and Long Beach Tech is here to support and assure the best possible launch pad for tech and app start-ups in the international city!

We bootstrap. We build. We educate. We unite. Join us!

Community Outreach

Long Beach Tech will continue to facilitate outreach by way of work shops with mentors in group settings. Easy to access and meet others in the City of Long Beach who work on tech projects. These events are non-exclusive mixers, pitch events, open working groups, and q/a panels.

Long Beach Tech is also open to taking on the responsibility of organizing TEDx now that the TED conferences have left the City.

Future events like hack nights, and working on Open Data policies with the City are in the scope of community outreach to bridge the gap between beneficial technology and a high tech city.

Education

Long Beach Tech has recognized an inherent problem with the talent pool in the city. Beyond attracting outside companies, which is increasingly higher cost, when competing with existing hi-tech hubs, a 10 year plan needs to be designed for direct development of software engineering talent. The current rate of unemployment for software engineers is 2.2% (Q1 2013), with increased demand expected. With these factors in mind, attracting a pool of software engineers to long beach would be cost prohibitive against Silicon Valley, Bolder, Boston and even Santa Monica.

Fortunately, an entry level software developer can be created in as little as 6 months of on the job training with at night learning. The basic skills required are 8th grade reading comprehension, pre-algebra (in some cases simple arithmetic), 10th grade writing. Online Courses are available for free to start, but an active application of knowledge and in person tutoring greatly accelerate this process.

Because of the nature of many tech companies, employees will work long hours, so students should be prepared for the maxims of this brave new world. Long Beach Tech proposes to teach new working age students as on the job trainees. This type of work experience will let students know if the world of Software Engineering is a place they would be excited about being.

Startup Founders will benefit from education by Long Beach Tech Mentors, and SBDC advisors. They will help to advise from a strategy level on moving the business into the next stage.

The three Stages of Education in the Tech Eco-System:

1) K-12 Learning - Long Beach Tech will host a coding for kids course 2-3 times a week at Long Beach Tech's facilities (daily rental, or otherwise permanent based on funding). The free course will provide at facilities computers, configured for software development. Parents can send children to the after school program to learn basic computer programming skills.

2) 14+ Internships - Long Beach Tech will take applications for Interns through the Pacific Gateway for entry level programming interns. These interns will be shadowed by a senior developer and placed onto a project for a Long Beach Tech company. Interns will be encouraged to work enduring hours with regular staff, to realize the time needed to successfully launch a new tech company. In that 6 month Internship program, an Intern should also take the K-12 programming course, eventually graduating to teaching these course to show full subject comprehension. After 6 months, interns will be evaluated and recommended for permanent positions within Long Beach Tech companies.

3) Founders - Long Beach Tech will hire individual consultants and mentors to work one on one with Long Beach Tech founders using SBDC funds and sourcing channels. Long Beach Tech will work to offer many of the same benefits of other start up incubators, but without the same quid-pro-quo motivators present at a traditional business incubator. Founders are coached on the best path at building a sustainable business in the city, by experienced ex founders.

Business Development

The business track for New businesses will be as follows:

1) Relocate offices to a Long Beach tech administered facility, this may be sub-leased from a larger space provider, or designed to Long Beach Techs specification.

2) Provide daily Mentoring interaction with founders so that their immediate needs can be solved.

3) Help new businesses develop a culture of SCRUM project management for software development. SCRUM will be merged with Lean project management principals for product development. Long Beach Tech's advisory is that this mixed methodology can produce the best market fit products at time and within budget.

4) Within 8 months, Long Beach Tech companies should show; first proof of concept product, initial user acquisition, first 5 sales. Upon reaching these benchmarks, companies will be presented to the public at Long Beach Tech Events for further interests in the private sector.
